B.V.R.B. : the mysterious story of a stamp 2 October 2014
Bernard Van Risen Burgh
Built by 4 initials, this mysterious stamp has intrigued reseacher and has allowed severals hypotheses. Especially as few of the bests furniture of Louis XV style have this stamp. It was only in 1957 that a student of Pierre Verlet from École du Louvre, Jean-Piere Baroli, after lengthy invistigations in notarial archives of « Faubourg Saint-Antoine » discovered the joiner behind this 4 initials.
With those archives, he find that this stamps has belonged to 3 craft men – father, son and grandson – having the same first name. Being wrong, Pierre Verlet thought that BVRB was a stamp from the Joiner Bernard but the 3 last initials had no sense.
So Jean-Pierre Baroli discovered a family from Netherland and named Van Risen Burgh. Sometime they spell it with mistakes : Vanrisemburgh or Vanrisamburgh. They are 3 persons from this family and strangely there is nothing about their acces to the « Master ». The 2 first received it before 1730 ( the official documents of Joiner master begin at 1735) and the third would never ask about this distinction. When his dad died, he went on under his mother management using the same stamp.
